Yes, we used real Blue Moon Ale in this cupcake along with orange zest. The end result was surprisingly (or maybe not so surprising if you like Blue Moon) delicious!

2010, over already?

This is late! I know that and have admitted it, so that makes it ok, right? Please forgive me. 2010 was a slower year for LBC, but a very busy year for owner, Kara.

In February, Kara took a road trip with her then boyfriend, Stefen, to pick up his sister, Grace, in Colorado. While they were there, up on a mountain (Pikes Peak, to be exact!) Kara was proposed to by the best guy around.

In the next 9 months Kara focused less on cakes, and more on the rest of her life; working at her day job, babysitting on the weekends, getting Stefen to FL, and planning the wedding. Things moved along almost too smooth so time went by incredibly fast. Stefen moved to FL in September, and they got married on November 13.

Kara did make her own -small- wedding cake and cupcakes for the guests. Although during the day of wedding busyness the cake ended up on the floor. So, a friend ran to Publix (yep..) and picked up a cake for cutting.

Now that Stefen and Kara are married, they take on any Little Big Cakes project as a team. LBC is complete!

Being almost 2 months into the new year, it has already started off fun and exciting. Little Big Cakes is even starting to venture out to more than just cakes. Yes, I said it. There are many new things we’d like to share, but not just yet. Until then, enjoy a few of our favorites from 2010!

A look back at 2009

Let’s see.. Where to begin? Little Big Cakes moved forward a lot in 2009. Although stressful at the time, there are many things to look back at and be thankful for!

Thanks to Stefen Phelps, we launched an awesome new website!! Little Big Cakes is also on Twitter and Facebook.

Little Big Cakes has attempted to ship cupcakes many times. Almost every time the result was the same: someone somewhere would receive a -although delicious- melted, smooshed little cake. Back in August I had read a comment on a cupcake blog from a girl who was wanting to send cupcakes to her boyfriend at a navy base out of state. I had replied, saying that I would love to help out if she needed any suggestions or ideas on how to send them. Well, a few days later I received an order for birthday cupcakes to be shipped to a navy base out of state! I had experimented many times and was never completely happy, but now I was forced to find a solution. Through this process, Little Big Cakes created “Cupcake Kits”. A cute little kit including tasty cupcakes, icing, and sprinkles to put on top!

Little Big Cakes entered a couple contests.. One was a contest Threadless put together, If you don’t know what the Threadless is, well check it out. The contest though, was called Threadcakes. People were asked to search through the hundreds of cool shirts at Threadless and remake it in cake form. I chose the “Impossible Love” shirt. Long story short – I didn’t win the contest. But it was needed practice and definitely an experience!

I also entered an ice cream cupcake contest, put together by Cupcake Project and Scoopalicious The rules were: make a cupcake, with a layer of icecream and then a layer of icing on top. I’m not a huge fan of carrot cake, but I wanted to try something different. So, I made a carrot cupcake, a layer of pecan icecream, and cream cheese frosting. There was a total of 35 other bakers/contestants and a total of 650 votes. After another long story short.. I won!

To finish off the year, Little Big Cakes was asked to make a 4×8 ft. sheet cake for the Hernando County Christmas parade. After a week of preparation, hours of baking, too many ingredients to count, I had a made a 4x8ft sheet cake! Something I never thought I would be asked to do, but had a lot of fun doing it.

Back in May/June of this year I entered in a cupcake contest, http://littlebigcakes.blogspot.com/2009/05/cupcake-project-cupcake-ice-cream.html Surprisingly I won, and got to pick from a list of prizes. I chose a 12 pack of cupcake wrappers from http://bellacupcakecouture.com

Well I waited and waited and waited but.. they never came. I kind of forgot about it but every now and then when someone would bring up the contest I would wonder when/if they were coming.

After a few months -five to be exact- I emailed Stef, the girl who contacted me when I won the contest. I told her I never received the cupcake wrappers and was just wondering if they didn’t get sent out or got mixed up in the mail. She quickly forwarded my email to Carrie(I’m guessing the owner of Bella Cupcake Couture), and Carrie quickly emailed me back saying “Hi there! Sorry to hear they never arrived. We’re happy to send out a replacement. What style would you like? We have a few which may look nice for the holidays. Thanks again!”

About a week or so later I received a package in the mail from Bella Cupcake Couture! I told her to just pick a style, and she did a great job at that also=)

Now that is great business, great service, and great cupcake wrappers=)

Can’t wait to use them!

Shipping cupcakes: AtTempt 3

I have been determined to figure this shipping thing out, especially with having family and friends living in a few different states.

So for attempt number 3 I decided instead of packing up a tasty, nicely decorated cupcake, I would send a tasty cupcake ready to be turned into a nicely decorated cupcake.

My supplies: 1 (or 2, which I later decided to add) cupcake 1 clear empty tube filled with icing, labeled with a Little Big Cakes label 1 bottle of sprinkles, labeled with a Little Big Cakes label 1 glad container, or a clear cupcake container 1 shipping box tape bubble wrap

When shipping one cupcake it should be clear to the receiver which cupcake to “squeeze” the icing onto, but when sending multiple cupcakes, it is helpful to label each icing tube with what flavor is contained in the tube and which cupcake it goes with.

I then of course placed the chocolate cupcake in the perfectly sized glad container..

I added a banana cupcake at the last minute because, well, why not?

And off they went!

Result: Definitely the most successful shipment experiment. Cupcake, icing, and sprinkles were all intact and looked the same as before they were sent off, not to mention they still tasted delicious.

If I had to change/fix one thing I would try and make a piping tip to put on the icing tube to make it a little “prettier” when squeezed onto the cupcake, unless of course the receiver just likes to spread it on.

So yes, I would say this was a success and I will be using this method in the future. Until of course I find another idea to experiment.
