How It Started
LBC started with a cupcake contest between baker, Kara Phelps, and her best friend to see who could make the best cupcakes. Somewhere in between filling liners with cake batter, coloring icing, and transporting them to their destination, she decided she wanted to make baking more than just a hobby. So, with the help from a few creative heads, Little Big Cakes was born.
About The Baker
Kara, raised in Brooksville FL since the age of 5, admits to being horrible in the kitchen when she was younger. “I had a friend who could throw anything together and make it taste amazing. She would always have to come to my rescue when I would mess something up. After spending so much time with her, I made it a goal of mine to tackle cooking and baking. After lots of failed recipes, burnt pans, and people not being able to eat the things I made, I finally got a hang of it. I am so much more grateful now to the art of baking.”
In 2010, Kara married her best friend of 8 years, Stefen Phelps. In 2011 they bought their first home located in downtown Brooksville and are currently living there happily, with their pet bunny, Mowgli.
Where is Little Big Cakes Now
Kara continues to bake out of her home, and delivers to most locations, the farthest (so far) being Orlando, FL. During the 2011 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature enacted House Bill 7209.
What does that mean for LBC? Well, we are now able to bake and sell out of our home kitchen without the requirements needed for a licensed commercial kitchen. We are also able to sell our products at Farmer's markets, which we have recently became a part of in downtown Brooksville at the “Market on Main Street”. LBC continues to experiment with new recipes and techniques to improve our desserts and keep our customers completely satisfied. We will gladly take new suggestions and ideas as well!
